Does Bleach Kill Mould?

Bleach can kill some mould, but killing mould and removing mould are not the same thing. Understanding the difference could change the way you approach a mould problem.

It's one of the most common questions people ask after discovering mould in their home.

The simple answer is yes, bleach can kill some mould under certain conditions.

But in my opinion, that's the wrong question.

The better question is: should killing mould be the objective at all?

Does bleach kill mould?

Bleach can kill many moulds that it comes into direct contact with, particularly on hard, non-porous surfaces such as glazed tiles, glass and sealed worktops.

However, mould remediation isn't simply about making mould non-viable.

It's about removing mould contamination from the building.

Killing mould isn't the same as removing mould

When mould grows, it doesn't just exist as a visible patch on a wall.

It produces spores, develops microscopic structures called hyphae and, over time, can leave behind fragments and other microbial debris.

Even if a product kills the mould, those particles don't simply disappear. They remain on the surface until they are physically removed.

This is an important distinction.

Non-viable mould is still mould contamination.

To add to that, In some situations, the visible mould you can see may only represent a small part of the overall contamination. Where building materials have become damp, mould can sometimes develop behind wallpaper, plasterboard, tiles or other finishes, remaining hidden from view. This is one of the reasons why simply spraying the visible surface with bleach may not always address the full extent of the problem.

What about biocides?

Many products are marketed on their ability to kill mould. Bleach is probably the best known, but there are countless fungicides, disinfectants and biocides that make similar claims.

Some of these products may have a place in specific situations, depending on the material, the level of contamination and the remediation strategy being used.

However, in my opinion, too much emphasis is placed on killing mould rather than removing it.

Professional mould remediation generally focuses on physically removing contamination from the building, not simply applying chemicals and hoping the problem has gone away.

So how should mould be dealt with?

The exact approach depends on the building, the extent of contamination, the materials affected and the remediation standard or accreditation being followed. Personally, I believe the priority should be the physical removal of mould contamination, rather than simply applying a product designed to kill mould, such as:

  • HEPA vacuuming

  • Damp wiping

  • Abrasive cleaning

  • Removal and replacement of contaminated building materials where necessary

  • Air decontamination

  • Fine/Small particle cleaning

Don't forget why the mould grew

Removing mould is only one part of the process.

Mould develops because conditions within the building allow it to grow. That may be due to condensation, a plumbing leak, penetrating damp, poor ventilation or another source of excess moisture.

Unless the underlying moisture issue is identified and addressed, mould is likely to return, regardless of which cleaning product is used.

Can bleach kill mould?

Yes, it can.

Should killing mould be the objective?

In my opinion, no.

The priority should be understanding why mould has developed, physically removing mould contamination where appropriate and correcting the moisture problem that allowed it to grow in the first place.
